The StarMax panel socket is a weather-resistant bulkhead connector that lets you bring an Ethernet, USB-A or USB-C connection through the wall, floor or roof of a vehicle without leaving a permanent hole. The connector is recessed into a moulded well in the faceplate and closed by a threaded cap on a lanyard, so the cable can be unplugged and the socket sealed. It is a StarMax original design, 3D printed in-house.

Why the recessed cap matters

On most panel sockets the cap stands proud of the surface, so it catches on clothing and gear, and a knock can unscrew it. On this one the cap screws down into the faceplate and finishes below the surface. In a van doorway, a locker or a boat cockpit — places people brush past a hundred times a week — that difference is the whole point.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this to bring a Starlink cable into my van?
That is the main reason it exists. Choose the RJ45 version, mount it in the wall or roof, and the dish cable plugs into the outside instead of going through a drilled and siliconed hole. When the dish comes off, cap the socket.

Is it waterproof?
It is weather-resistant. With the cap screwed down the connector is protected from rain, spray and dust. It is not designed to be submerged, and the fixing holes should be bedded in sealant on an exterior panel.

What size hole do I need?
See the dimensions in the specifications. Measure before you cut — it is much easier than filling a hole that is too big.

Does the USB version charge devices?
No. It is a pass-through, not a charger. You wire the inside face to whatever supply or device you are using. That also means there are no electronics to fail.

Can I mount it on the outside of a vehicle?
Yes, that is the intended use. Bed the faceplate and fixings in sealant as you would any exterior fitting.

Which shape should I pick?
They differ in the number and spread of fixing holes — hexagonal has 6, square 8, round 12. More holes means more chance of finding something solid behind the panel. Otherwise it is aesthetic.
